The Carlisle Trails Committee and the Conservation Commission will host a public vernal pool walk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. Chris Kavalauskas, former Conservation Commission chairman and wildlife ecologist will lead the exploration of vernal pools on land owned by the Carlisle Conservation Foundation located on the east side of West Street near the intersection with Apple Grove Lane. She will also bring some sample vernal pool obligate species.
This is a great family activity. Wear clothes appropriate for the weather and wet footing. Bring small containers and magnifiers to view some of the smaller examples of vernal pool life. (A white Frisbee would be excellent for this!) Note that the trail leading to one vernal pool rises steeply for a short distance. Refreshments will be served after the walk. For more information, call Henry Cox: 978-371-0316.

Greenough Bridge Construction
|
April 11 2009, 9:00AM
|
Greenough Bridge
There are two ways to reach the bridge:
1) use the parking lot on Maple Street, the longer walk, or
2) take the trail from the Greenough barn. Take Maple Street (which turns into Treble Cove Rd. in Billerica) to Route 4, head south to the river, just before the river turn right onto "River Edge" and drive to the end. There is a dirt driveway that dips down to the barn. It is recommended that you walk down the driveway as it is badly rutted and requires a high clearance vehicle. Take the trail north between the pond and the barn (0.4 mi).

The Carlisle Trails Committee has been making preparations for the first bridge building effort of 2009. You are invited to join us this Saturday, April 11, starting at 9:00 am (or any other time you can spare during the day). The bridge on the eastern tip of Greenough Pond is being replaced. Part of the project involves work in standing water so bring knee-high waterproof boots if you have them. There will be lots of nailing so bring your favorite hammer, nail apron, tape measure, etc. The Trails Committee generally supplies all the other tools required.
Please help carry in any building materials you see at the trail head.
Coffee and doughnuts and lunch will be provided.
This is a good opportunity to earn Community Service hours (contact Steve Tobin if you have questions: 978-369-1680).
For other questions contact Steve Tobin or Henry Cox: 978-371-0316.
